Emotions are a necessary evil. You must be wondering why I’d say evil, well, that’s because when we fail to assert control over our emotions; things can go awry and we can fall into a loop of negative mindset. However, once we have them under control, it allows us to focus and think clearer. Which eventually contributes to our growth as a person, in all aspects of life.
What happens when we have a good hold over our emotions?
When we are able to effectively manage and control our emotions, we experience increased productivity, as we can focus on tasks without constant distractions. This, in turn, leads to a greater sense of happiness and fulfillment, both in our professional and personal relationships. Apart from the positive impact on mental health by reducing the risk of severe depression, emotional satisfaction also plays a role in improving sleep quality, fostering a healthier diet, and equipping individuals with the resilience necessary to overcome life’s challenges and failures.
In general, having some level of control over our emotions can be quite advantageous. Even from a purely logical or objective perspective. Happier individuals not only tend to live longer, but they also benefit from leading a healthier lifestyle and maintaining better cognitive health as they age.
What happens when we have poor control over our emotions?
When we have poor control over our emotions; we have higher anxiety, more negative thoughts, higher chances of being depressed, poorer quality of relationships, higher chances of developing poor habits, and consequently missing out on many potential opportunities in both our personal and professional lives.
The main cause of poor emotional regulation is a lack of awareness and understanding of our own emotions. Although distraction may provide temporary relief, it is rarely a long-term solution, it’s more like a band-aid. For long-term stability, we need to sit, learn, then introspect. It is something we will have to consistently do for as long as we live.
